How long have you been in business?
It will be 4 years this August.
What do you sell?
A variety of quality home décor from everyday use to holiday specific pieces. We enjoy mixing old with new, combining metal with wood, and we’re always coming up with new combos together in the woodshop.
What inspired you to start your business?
While planning our wedding in 2015, I turned to Etsy for items we didn’t have time to make or were just outside of our wheelhouse. We built a s’mores bar and painted a boat light blue to hold drinks, yeah we’re THAT weird, but wanted to continue this creative outlet afterward. I started coming up with a new idea each month to fill our home with furniture and accents built and personalized to our taste. We made countless signs, a wine holder, painted an antique ice box, and the list goes on. We have passion behind our work, and after receiving positive feedback on social media from family and friends, we knew to share our products with the world. On August 1, 2017 our business launched!
Tell us a little about what makes your shop unique.
It’s all in the details when it comes to Oak Knoll Creations. Jarrid’s years of woodworking and mechanical knowledge gives our products an edge above the rest. I keep up with designs that are on trend while still staying true to our style. Everything you’ll find on our page is created though a combined effort incorporating both creative backgrounds.
What is your typical day like?
I really wish I could say we’ve experienced a typical day since pursuing entrepreneurship full time. Lately it’s all about comfy clothes, making each other laugh, and lots of candles to keep up the morale. Currently I spend most of my time on the computer designing, marketing, and running our Etsy shop. It’s never quiet with the laser firing and Jarrid operating the CNC in the woodshop. Being the noisier of the two, he’s also busy making batches of our best sellers, cutting down lumber, and maintaining all the equipment. Trust me when I say there are plenty of play breaks thanks to our dog Jett! At the end of the day, we come together to package orders, then relax on the couch. This is when we stay up way too late binge-watching something on Netflix or Hulu.
What successes within your business makes you most proud?
Knowing that we have served thousands of happy customers. Whether for gift giving or simply filling their home with handmade goods, each individual chose to put their trust in us. The fact that we can wow them enough to receive a raving review is amazing.
On a more personal side, we have created a flourishing business that has given us the freedom of a flexible work schedule and more quality time together.
What are some challenges you have faced as a small business owner?
Deciding when to leave our full time jobs, sourcing materials during the pandemic, and keeping up with the holidays rush are the top 3 for sure!
How have you utilized LC within your business?
In every way possible! I guarantee you, the instant I download new photos, they’re up on Etsy. Collaborations are so exciting because I get to see another professional’s point of view on our newest or best selling item. They’re posted all over our social media pages and are so well received. We’ve been fortunate enough to be noticed by magazines, displayed on the Etsy homepage, part of various gift guides, and most recently have items chosen as Etsy’s Picks. I can’t wait for more collaborations and the opportunity to work with even more amazing people.
If you can give one piece of advice to a shop owner just starting out, what would it be?
Always stay true to yourself. There may be a lot of sellers in your field of work, but no one is going to make it exactly like you.
